What happened with EarthBound Zero was `qb ,d$b. that Nintendo of America had it translated from japanese and ,d$b. $$ ' everything, but somewhere along the way, scrapped the funding ` $$ `qb for a public release. So what are you left with? Prototype qb' ,d$b. carts! an instant rarity as |tsr would say. ,d$b. ` $$ $$ ' qb' Anyhow, some guy by the name of Mariotti obtained one of `qb ,d$b. these Prototype carts from a mysterious source from Nintendo ,d$b. $$ ' of America and was auctioning it off in mid-January, 1998. ` $$ `qb Someone let the translation community know about it on my qb' ,d$b. wwwboard a few days later. since i was planning on doing an ,d$b. ` $$ unofficial translation hack of it myself (like we did with $$ ' qb' final fantasy 2j), this was indeed very kewl to hear. `qb ,d$b. ,d$b. $$ ' Alas, the cart had already been sold by the time i could get ` $$ `qb ahold of the guy. This is where the story takes a wierd turn. qb' ,d$b. After a month or so, we finally managed to find out the email ,d$b. ` $$ address of the guy who bought the prototype cart. A deal was $$ ' qb' struck for 400 (!$@#!@#$) dollars to be able to dump the ROM, `qb ,d$b. 200 up front and 200 when the dump was successful. Apparently ,d$b. $$ ' this guy was concerned about the depreciation of the cart's ` $$ `qb value, since once dumped, it would no longer be a one of a qb' ,d$b. kind item. ,d$b. ` $$ $$ ' qb' After weeks of begging, sobbing, as well as a good bit of `qb ,d$b. criticism by the people who thought it was all a sham, we ,d$b. $$ ' finally got enough money together to actually go through with ` $$ `qb this. So, the cash was mailed on 4/22/98, the buyer sent the qb' ,d$b. cart on 4/25, and the ROM was dumped, hacked, and released on ,d$b. ` $$ 4/27. $$ ' qb' `qb ,d$b. The ROM required a moderate amount of hacking in order to get ,d$b. $$ ' it running well with popular NES emulators (NESticle). Orig- ` $$ `qb inally, there was a bug with the text display, so TrelaneQ qb' ,d$b. did a little job with the coding (only one byte was actually ,d$b. ` $$ changed) to get it to display text without locking up. How- $$ ' qb' ever, as the public played through the game with this newly `qb ,d$b. released hack, at two crucial points in the game we got these ,d$b. $$ ' illegal screen messages telling us that our ROM had been ` $$ `qb tampered with and that it would no longer function. This was qb' ,d$b. a result of TrelaneQ's hacking the ROM, so Barubary (another ,d$b. ` $$ ROM hacker - he did the ff5 translation) and TrelaneQ went $$ ' qb' back into the ROM to nullify the self-checking code which `qb ,d$b. made the game jump to the illegal screen.
