One of the best games for the NES system,
Crystalis was easily my answer to the question "What
game is in your NES?" for a good two years. Also known as
God Slayer in Japan, this was one of my favorite games
ever. This prototype kind of came out of nowhere. With
absolutely no warning or chance to outbid him, Ballz
somehow came up with both this prototype as well as the
prototype for Mechanized Attack. Mechanized Attack turned
out to be bit-for-bit identical to the release version,
save for the fact it was burned onto EPROMS instead of
ROMS. This is a little different story however. While it
doesn't differ greatly from the release version, there are
some noticable differences in this version from the
release. |
When this ROM was first released, there was a problem
with the CHR, but the PRG was completely intact, so while it looked like
shit, the important part of the data still was intact. After experimenting
with the cart and a nice, complete cleaning of the cart's contact, a
redump produced this new dump. While it's still not perfect, at least the
vertical lines that plagued the initial dump have been
eliminated.
This looks like another magazine
preview copy however, because all that has been found different between
this version and the final release are a few dialog differences and
some typos in the script dump. |

Feel free to read the script dump - I'm not
reading the whole thing =D

In playing this prototype,
out of sheer nostalgia I had to play the entire
game. While the differences between the proto and the
final are really quite minor, for anyone who is a die-hard
Crystalis fan like me should enjoy this one. Now if only
they could fix the emus so the screen didn't jerk every
time a dialog box opened...
