This is really quite an
excellent game. It has very good, very tight play control,
semi-decent graphics, excellent music and sounds, and is a
game from one of the best Robocop comic books. So what
went wrong with this game? Well, the first problem is the
storyline. While it is based off the comic, they seemed to
forget one minor detail. While the story is somewhat
brought over from the comic in the intro, the game in NO
way reflects that story. The plot has been completely
removed and only three points of the original comic book
remain, which i will explain later. |
| The
second problem is the more likely death of this game. The
copyright date on the title screen is 1993. Now, I dunno
about all of you, but in 1993 my friends and I were all
playing Sonic the Hedgehog on our Sega
Genesises. Unfortunately, as good as I think this game is,
it is nowhere near the standard of game released in 1993,
even on the NES. There's actually not a whole lot of information around
on this game. I don't recall ever reading about it in Nintendo Power, and
it's not on Mike Etler's Rarity List. The first mention I've found of the game is on this interview on TSR's
NES Archive. The quote is as follows: |

"Q: Did you make any
other NES works?
A: I made Robocop Vs. Terminator for Interplay. It was a
very very bad game. The artists on that game
couldn't deal well with the limits of the NES so it looks
very bad and the designer was a recently promoted
playtester and he didn't really know what he was doing.
My attitude was that I would pretty much do what I was
told (since I was doing it as a contract) and so I didn't
push any design issues.
At the time they told me it probably wouldn't ship in the
United States but it might ship in Europe. I didn't
keep a working version of the source; otherwise I thought
about leaking it out on the net."

Shortly thereafter, the ROM was released through TSR's site. It's
still unclear how the ROM was released, and that may be by design; a cart
very well may not exist. However, do yourself a favor and
give it a shot. If you like action games, you
will enjoy it.
