Ahhh, Bugs Bunny's Fun
House. Now here's a prototype with quite a history behind it.Now,
this game was commercially released as Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle, and I'm
sure almost everyone reading this page has played this game at one time
or another. However, what we have here is a pre-release copy of the
game with a different title.
Why was it changed?
Hell if I know. But somewhere along the lines of the development
process, the name changed from Bugs Bunny's Fun house to Bugs Bunny's Crazy
Castle. In my opinion, both titles fit, but still the game itself
doesn't make a whole lot of sense...
|
| Now, don't get
me
wrong, I liked this game - its a fun variant of the maze crawler genre - collect
all the carrots while avoiding the multi-colored Sylvesters. Yes,
the cat that usually chases Tweety has suddenly developed a taste for rabbit,
split into many colored forms, and started chasing Bugs around. Uh
huh. Whatever.
Anyway, there are almost no differences between
this ROM and the release game. The only outwardly recognizable differance
is the title screen. But look closer... |

The passwords
are different
too - they are not the same as the passwords in the release cart... but
still, Bugs Bunny does not fit in this game... Even by cartoon logic, this
fun mess makes absolutely no sense... Enter the wonderful world of Americanization ladies
and gentlemen.... |
| That's right!
This game did NOT star Bugs Bunny at all originally - it starred Roger
Rabbit! This game was a Japanese Famicom Disk System only release,
and none of the "usual" Warner Bros. characters are anywhere to be seen
- this is a game about Roger Rabbit running from the weasels... which with
all the items lying around and the colors of the enemies make a LOT more
sense than multi-colored Sylvesters running after Bugs Bunny collecting
his carrots. |

The gameplay
between the two games is identical,
but in an effort to hide the fact they slapped Bugs onto another game,
Kemco changed all the passwords on the game for the final release, as the
passwords for this proto are the same as the ones in Roger Rabbit.
I suppose this was to hide the fact that Nintendo games were conveniently
reworked from their original intention to some scewed, corporate sellout
version of the same game. But hey, whatever. I'm not a high-paid
executive making decisions... it ain't up to me or my
opinions. |

Despite all the bashing I've done on this
review, I owned this cart in the past and I really do like this game.
However, when you look at it in a whole, having Roger Rabbit as the main
character makes a whole lot more sense, no matter what title it's released
under.
You've seen this game already tho... this release
is basically for completists like myself... I love to see development
verisons of games, and this gives just a little more of a hint into what
changes are made to a game before release...
