Battlezone has always
been one of my favorite arcade games. I personally think its one
of those timeless games that can't be beat - there's nothing like driving
around in a tank and blowing shit up. While the arcade game had some
of the best vector graphics of the day, the Atari 5200 version can't quite
live up to the same.
While this game gives it a
try, it just doesn't succeed. I mean, it looks similar to the arcade,
and plays similar to the arcade, it doesn't live up. The "vectors"
are chunky and look lame, the gameplay is slow, and the controls suck.
Atari probably made the right decision killing this one.

Since the Atari 5200 is nowhere near as powerful
as the arcade game was, the backrounds could not be done as vector lines,
but were replaced with a colorful mountain range. Unlike most people,
I don't think this is a problem, and in fact looks pretty good.
Unfortunately, look at the tank. It looks
more like a pile of dishes than a tank. Hardare limitations, but
still, they coulda done better.

This is a screen
you're
gonna see a lot of. The collision detection is not at 100%, so you're
gonna have a hard time hitting the enemy, while they don't seem to have
any problem hitting you. |

All in all, it's pretty similar to the arcade
game, but its just not quite good enough. The game itself seems about
95% complete, so it's not quite clear if the game itself was axed in development,
or if the Crash killed it. Either way, it's fun to experiment with,
but if you really want to play the game, download it for MAME...
