One of the earliest rumored games for the Atari 5200, Asteroids was promised from the very first advertisements for the 5200... but the game never materialized...
Why not? It was fully completed and the game even had a prototype box and label. See there was one severe problem with this game - it was completely unplayable with the standard 5200 non-centering controllers. You might be able to move around haphazardly, but without the centering joystick, Asteroids was nigh-impossible.
Now, Along with this prototype was discovered an Atari 5200 Asteroids controller, but I have not been able to find nary a picture of said joystick, so I can't present it here.
I'm sure you're looking at these screenshots by this point and wondering "What the hell is up with these huge asteroids and deformed everything??"
Well, blame it on Jum52 - the only available Mac 5200 emu. This is the best it can do.

I hear Dan Boris's VSS Emu can do better... if anyone wants to provide information, I'll put it here....
Well, first off at this point, I would like to apologize to AlanD, who gave me working pics of Asteroids on the PC version of Jum52 - photos he sent me and I promptly lost. :(

Anyway, a scan of the cart finally turned up for this game, although I do not know if the cart scan of the very same dumped cart, but it would be similar even if it isn't the same one :)
