Personally, I'm just in awe that Tod Frye was able to get a
game on the Atari 2600 to have any resemblance to the arcade game Xevious. Amazingly, Mr. Frye
was able to squeeze a whole lot out of the 2600 to create a game that is incredibly similar
to the arcade game! While the gameplay isn't exactly finished on this game, just giving this
a play and seeing how arcade-like it is... it's just simply amazing!
Now I can see
all of you who just downloaded this ROM now, "Ok Blackjax, put DOWN the crack pipe and just back
away!" Anyone who says that needs to look at what the programmers had to work with.
128 bytes of RAM would be enough to cripple any serious programming effort. Somehow though,
Tod Frye was able to cram the graphics AND gameplay (somewhat) into an Atari 2600 effort.

Playing the game, unfortunately, is not the greatest experience
in the world. To be fair however, the completion level of the game couldn't have been more
than 50 to 60 percent. I'm sure that if he had more time, the gameplay itself would have been
at least at the same level as the graphics, if not even better. It's a shame that this one
didn't get completed, but at least we finally got a home version with the Atari 7800.

This prototype really is more of a technical triumph for Tod Frye
than it is a great game to play. We all know that the Atari 2600 had nowhere near the power
to play a game like Xevious, but somehow Mr. Frye managed to find a way to get it done. Like
I sad above, its a shame this wasn't completed, it could have been one of the best!
