Some games you can tell are
instant classics from the moment you first pop them into
the machine (or emulator these days) and power them
up. Excellent gameplay, outstanding graphics and/or sound
effects, a gripping storyline, or unique gameplay,
something will always strike you when you are playing that
timeless classic for the first time. Save Mary however,
contains none of those qualities. Frankly, people were
foaming at the mouth to get this one dumped for a long
time, and now that it IS dumped, it's quite obvious that
this one wasn't killed by the crash, but by its own
horrible horrible gameplay.
For the record, 8
copies of this game were found and sold through Best
Electronics. |

The game itself is simple
enough. Move your crane to one of the bricks coming from
either the left or right side of the screen, hold down the
fire button to pick the brick up, move it into the
position you want it to fall into and let go of the button
to drop it. The goal is to build a pile high enough so
you can grab Mary with the crane and carry her over to
safety. There are two ways to lose a life - you can
either let Mary drown from the rising water, or squash her
with one of the bricks you're moving around. Amazingly
enough, Mary's decently smart for an Atari 2600 character
- she will automatically climb up to the highest built
point you make without any encouragement from you. |

The first thing I want to
know about this game that I haven't been able to find an
answer to is why the hell does it have a 1990 copyright
date? The 2600 was long since dead and buried
commercially at that point Another thing that may be
hurting the game is the fact that it doesn't seem to be
finished. Along with the bricks that cycle out of the
sides, bonus items will appear, however there does not
appear to be any way to collect these. Overall, a nice
attempt at a game, but ultimately a failed one...
