Any child of the 80's will tell fond memories of the watching the Dukes of Hazzard and how cool they thought the Dukes were. Unfortunately, if you happen to catch the Dukes in a rerun on cable nowadays, everybody seems to agree that they are about as cool as having bodily parts slowly lowered into a chipper-shredder while they're still attached to you. This game is about as enjoyable as that. Atari took two stabs at doing a Dukes of Hazzard game and unfortunately failed miserably at both. While it is a complete game and seems to be ready for release, frankly, the gameplay sucks and this dog was put to sleep for a reason.
You, of course, control the General Lee attempting to get to the jail in time to save Dixie Duke before Boss Hogg gets to her. That's the big purple blob if you're looking at the picture above - now I don't know about you, but I personally remember the General Lee being orange, but whatever. You need to avoid the police cars, the white blob in the picture above, using... er... SOMETHING to help disable the police if they are chasing you (these are flashing dots on the road you can pick up and press the FIRE button to drop - they cause the police car to spin out). When you get to the jail, pull up to the back and you are treated to a cutscene of the General Lee jumping a canyon and the next level starts.
Best Electronics was selling copies of this prototype for quite a while. While they are now sold out, it is unclear whether they were making the carts themselves or if they were from an aborted commercial release of this game. No one is talking with an exact answer to that question, but one play of this stinker will give a very good example of why the Crash of 1983 took place. Companies were churning out crap like this on a regular basis - the manufacturer did good by shelving this one, but it still stands as an interesting prototype none the less just because it was ready for release...
