Here we have Cubicolor, a game programmed by Rob Fulop for Imagic. This game was made back in 1982, but not released until 1993-1994 by the programmer himself. Despite there being a letter from the programmer sent with every one of the 60 copies of the game that were released, there are still gross misrepresentations of what this game really is based off of everywhere in print. Despite the claims by everyone, this game is NOT based off of the Rubik's Cube in ANY WAY - that was the horrible horrible Atari Video Cube offered through the Atari Club. This game is based off of a completely different Erno Rubik (or his company's) creation - the board game Rubik's Race. Along with the usual in-game shots for this game, I've also included shots of the actual board game, hopefully to once and for all wipe the assumption that this game was based off the Rubik's Cube off the map forever.
Here is the box for the game Rubik's Race. I've had this game forever - picked it up at a garage sale for a buck when i was like eight years old. In the heyday of the Rubik's craze, there were about thirty different Rubik items, such as the Rubik's Cube, Rubik's Rings, the evil Rubik's Puzzle, as well as this game, Rubik's Race. Cubicolor is 100% *IDENTICAL* to this board game, which involves sliding tiles to match a pattern in the shaker.

The gameplay between the the videogame version is exactly the same as the board game - slide the times so that the nine center tiles match the pattern in the shaker. The "shaker" can be seen on Cubicolor next to the board on both sides (they're the same) and is sitting next to the board in the picture to the left. In fact, the only difference between the two is how you win - in the board game you have to slam down the center window over your pieces, blocking out the boarder tiles which do not count, but in Cubicolor the computer does that for you.

I suppose my view on this game is a little skewed since I used to play the board game all the time with my friends and parents. This is a fun two-player game, however, all of the fun of trying to finish before your opponent disappears when you're playing one player, so unless you're playing with a friend, the game really loses something...
