Nothing like a little bit of
corporate propoganda. Pepsi Invaders is nothing more than a
hacked version of Space Invaders, modified so that the
"invaders" are the letters P E P S I (as you can see in
the picture to the left). There are a few differences
between this game and the released Space Invaders. You
have only three minutes to kill the invaders before the
game ends. You also have unlimited lives, so all dying
does is waste some of your precious time. The final
change between this game is the fact that the Invaders
will never land - they get to the bottom of the screen and
simply keep moving back and fourth, never touching the
ground to end the game. |
Not even the UFO was left
unchanged in this game - as you can see to the right, the
UFO has been changed into the classic Pepsi symbol. Other
than the few changes mentioned here, there's not a whole
lot to say about this game, considering it's not much more
than a hack of Space Invaders.
Digital Press has recently brought forward a few facts
about this game in issue 46 of their 'zine. There were only 125 copies of it made
(officially). The long debate about the title is finally over as well -
the programmer, Christopher Omarzu, has confirmed that the official title of the game is Pepsi
Invaders and not Coke Wins as previously thought. The game was originally distributed
at a 1983 Coca-Cola sales convention, and all the attending executives recieved a full 2600
setup with several games, including none other than Pepsi Invaders. |

Well, it's Space
Invaders. Not a whole lot to say about it. At least thanks to Digital
Press we finally have the story behind this game...
